Beware of these Four Common Toxins in Your Sunscreen
Oxybenzone
Among the many harmful ingredients found in over-the-counter sunscreens, oxybenzone is particularly horrible. It is linked to a series of health issues including endocrine disruption, organ toxicity, allergies, and sun poisoning.
Oxybenzone is also harmful to aquatic life. It is destructive like a micro plastic - damaging coral reefs. In fact, Hawaii has banned it.
Octinoxate
Found in many different cosmetics, Octinoxate is an active ingredient in chemical sunscreens used UV filter.
According to a study conducted by Environmental Health Perspectives scientists on coral bleaching, it is toxic to coral reefs. Many resorts located near coral reefs require biodegradable sunscreen for that reason.
Homosalate
Homosalate is known as a potential endocrine disruptor and it may impact hormones. It may also enhance the absorption of pesticides in the body. It may also enhance the penetration of other harmful ingredients found within your sunscreen.
In addition, Homosalate stays in the environment, meaning it does not easily break down. Meaning it stays in the environment wrecking all sorts of havoc on the environment.
Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles are found in many skincare and cosmetic products, such as sunscreen, makeup, shampoo, and toothpaste. Interestingly, they are also used in electronics, fabrics, scratch-resistant glass, and many other items.
Because they are so small, Nanoparticles are easily absorbed by the skin, which calls its safety into question. They may even stress and damage your body's cells, causing accelerated aging.
